Scottish Rent At Lower Rate Than Rest of UK

Property in Scotland have increased at a significantly slower rate than the rest of the UK in the last four years according to a survey from Your Move.

Rents in Scotland increased by 5.3% in the last four years with rents in England and Wales almost doubling in that time. Rents south of the border increased by 9.6% with Scottish tenants paying an average of £536 per month.

Rent Increase

Glasgow and Edinburgh were the most likely areas to see a relatively large growth in rent with Edinburgh and Glasgow seeing a 3% plus rise in rent.

Conversely rents in Highlands and Islands rents dropped by 1.6% and 1.4% respectively in the year.

Brian Moran, area lettings director at Your Move, said: "Scottish tenants are having a much smoother ride than their counterparts south of the border, with rental prices in Scotland climbing at a considerably slower pace.

"Despite snowballing demand for homes to let, the private rented sector has managed to shelter tenants from the worst extremes of rent inflation and rents have navigated an affordable route broadly trailing inflation."

Price Rise

The report found that although rents were increasing, the price to buy a house outright was increasing. Indeed, properties in Scotland are close to pre-recession levels, with a number of people looking to get on the property ladder ahead of the next land tax coming into effect on April 1st to replace stamp duty.
