Heirs to Prince’s Estate Named

Over a year after Prince’s untimely death, a judge in Minnesota has named the singer’s sister, Tyka Nelson, and his five half-siblings as heirs to his estate, reports the Independent.

Prince died in April last year, leaving behind an estate thought to be worth around $200 million, which includes properties owned by Prince as well as rights to his many hit songs. Unfortunately, however, the singer apparently failed to write a will expressing his wishes over how his estate should be distributed, and as a result a complex and lengthy dispute quickly developed over who should be heirs to his estate.

Over 45 people came forward claiming to have some sort of relationship with Prince, and as such to have a right to be considered an heir to his estate. However, the majority of these claims have now been thrown out by the court, leaving just his siblings to inherit his wealth. They will need to wait at least another year before they are able to do so, however, as the judge hearing the case has specified the rejected claimants should have time to appeal against the decision should they so choose.

Having an up-to-date will is important for all adults, as dying intestate, or without a will, can cause distress and complications for loved ones at an already difficult time. Alarmingly, research conducted last year by website unbiased.co.uk found that as many as 59% of UK adults have not yet made a will.
