The number of people unemployed in Scotland has risen by 18,000 in the last three months according to official figures. Worryingly, this indicates that Scotland is bucking the UK trend with the number of unemployed falling throughout the country.
In Scotland, unemployment now sits at 170,000 with the rise of 18,000 occurring from June to August. In contrast, unemployment elsewhere in the UK fell by 79,000 taking the total to 1.7 million in total. The jobless rate in Scotland is now 6.1% in comparison to the 5.4% seen in the rest of the UK.
Employment in Scotland also fell by 6,000 with the number of people claiming Job Seekers Allowance also rising by 500.
The UK government's Scottish Secretary David Mundell said: "The figures released today show the challenges that remain to ensure households in every part of our country benefit from a growing economy.
"There can be no doubt there is still hard work to undertake to build on the UK government's long-term economic plan which has tackled a record deficit and laid the foundations for a stronger and more stable economy."
Youth and Female Employment
]Despite the rise in the number of unemployed, the Scottish government insisted that it was doing all it could for to reduce employment stating that it was leading the way in female employment and youth employment.
