A father has been awarded custody of his two sons after a judge was highly critical of their mother’s “permissive” parenting style, reports the Guardian. Despite being an English case, it is still relevant in Scotland as an interesting example of the circumstances in which a court could revoke an existing custody order.
The couple had been married for six years, before separating in 2002. In 2004, custody was awarded to the mother, with the father allowed contact at the weekends. However, in 2012 the father began legal proceedings for full custody as he claimed he was regularly denied contact with his sons.
He raised concerns about his children’s well-being, alleging that they were allowed to do as they like and that their schooling and behaviour were being affected. He also alleged, according to the Telegraph, that the mother had tried to alienate the children from him.
The judge ruled in his favour, accepting his evidence that his former wife was more like a friend than a mother to the children, and that she had “significantly failed” the children, reports the Guardian.
