A recent statistical release has given a detailed analysis of marriage, civil partnership and divorce in Scotland.
The release, from the Registrar General for Scotland, is based on Census 2011 data, and shows that in that year 98% of people in the 16 to 24 age group in Scotland were single i.e. never married or entered into a same sex civil partnership.
This proportion drops as the age groups rise:
- 78% of those aged 25 to 29 were single,
- 54% of those aged 30 to 34,
- 28% of those aged 35 to 49,
- and 9% of those aged 50 and over.
The statistics also reveal that 68% of people between the ages of 40 and 79 were married or in a civil partnership. Separation was most common in the 40 to 49 age group (6%) and the 45 to 59 age group had the highest proportion of people who were divorced (15%).
Of the 4.3 million people aged 16 and over who lived in a household in Scotland at the time of the 2011 Census, 56% lived in a couple, including 45% living in a married or registered same-sex civil partnership and 11% in a cohabiting couple.
The proportion of people living in a married or registered same-sex civil partnership couple was higher than the proportion living in a cohabiting couple for those aged 30 and over. Around 17% of those aged 20 to 24 and 28% of those aged 25 to 29 lived in a cohabiting couple, compared with 3% and 18% respectively who were living in a married couple.
