Amazon, the world’s largest online retailer, have been accused of creating a hostile culture for workers following a New York Times report.

The report from the newspaper takes evidence from 100 present and former employees of the company with some stating that the working hours and conditions of the workplace led to health issues and family issues. The report also claims that employees who were having emotional issues such as going through a miscarriage or a cancer diagnosis were “forced out”.

Issues With Working Culture

The New York Times report stated that workers were expected to respond to emails after midnight and that the culture of the workplace had an adverse effect on all members of staff.

Amazon's boss Jeff Bezos wrote in a memo to staff that the "article doesn't describe the Amazon I know" and denied many of the claims against the tech giants. In Mr Bezos' memo, he encouraged Amazon employees to read the article, and email him directly if they recognised any of the "shockingly callous management practices" it described.

A worker at Amazon took to social media to respond to the article Nick Ciubotariu, a current employee said.  "No one tells me to work nights. No one makes me answer emails at night. No one texts me to ask me why emails aren't answered."

The article, which has received global attention also claimed that the company encouraged the glass ceiling and that there were not many females in management or senior roles, however, this has been denied by the company.
